The Peruvian mine becomes the first medium-sized mining company in the world to obtain this prestigious certification.
Lima, August 29, 2022; Compañía Minera Condestable (CMC), a company belonging to the Peruvian group Southern Peaks Mining (SPM), has been awarded The Copper Mark certification. This prestigious certification for copper-producing companies has for the first time in the world recognized a medium-sized mining company with world-class standards.
The company underwent a major transformation based on its Constant Innovation and Sustainability pillars. As a result, it has been able to meet the guidelines required by The Copper Mark, demonstrating a responsible production practice aligned with contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), ICMM standards, and other international standards.
“The Copper Mark certification awarded to Compañía Minera Condestable is a very important achievement for the company and for mining in Peru. We hope to have paved the way for large, medium-sized and small mining companies established in the country to choose to certify to the highest standards that they operate sustainably,” said Adolfo Vera, CEO of Southern Peaks Mining.
To obtain the certification, the mining company went through an exhaustive process, in which environmental criteria – such as reducing its carbon footprint and the sustainable use of water – as well as social and corporate governance criteria, were reviewed. The Copper Mark audit team traveled to the area and was able to review first-hand how the company has been developing its work and improving people’s quality of life.
“We firmly believe that it is possible to develop sustainable, efficient and responsible mining practices with the environment, communities and interest groups. We are heading towards an energy transition and copper is fundamental to achieve this since it is a key input for the development of technologies that allow us to have clean energies such as electric vehicles, wind and solar power plants, among others”, said Cecilia Rabitsch, SPM’s vice-president of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability.
The Copper Mark is the first and only certification developed specifically for the copper extractive industry. In this way, customers, investors and stakeholders can be assured that the company’s production performance is suitable and sustainable.
Compañía Minera Condestable is an underground copper mine with more than 60 years of operation. CMC currently has a processing capacity of 8,400 tons per day. It is located in Mala, just one hour from Lima, demonstrating that mining, agriculture, and development can go hand in hand.
